Indian Airlines plane hijack is a documentary by National geography channel based on the event that took place around Christmas time in 1999. The film covers the story of flight IC814 carrying 178 passengers using eyewitness accounts.
New millennium just 7 days away, it was 24th December 1999 when the flight IC814 took off from Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, India. Five heavily armed hijackers had on boarded the aircraft. Soon, they controlled the pilots and moved the airplane far from India to Karachi in Pakistan and then to Kandhar in Afganistan. These hijackers were accused to be the members of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, a Pakistan-based terror group.
The then government lead by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to negotiate with the terror group due to pressure from the families of hijacked passengers and from other sources. The negotiation was to free three terrorists arrested by Indian Intelligence. It was a smooth negotiation but who would have imagined that these freed terrorists would later be masterminds of carrying out major terror attacks including the 9/11 attack on US.
